We’ve had this notice on our calendar for way over a month. It seems like it might have been the end of October when our daughter-in-law asked if we would be available December 3rd through the 6th. We assumed it would be to babysit our 20 month old grandson, Pierce. We call him “P” or “Perse.” That’s what his cousin, Dax, calls him. It doesn’t take much for names to stick in our family. We jumped at the chance to take care of Pierce. Dec. 3-6 has been on our refrigerator on a sticky-note for that long.
What an angel! Well, most of the time anyway…he is, after all, almost two. At the age of almost two, a person begins to form opinions. They also begin to let you know what they’re thinking. For instance, if they aren’t in the mood to eat lunch when served, and if you don’t have a hold on the plate, it may just go sailing across the table and onto the floor. There is no “4 second rule” necessary with two rather large dogs who just wait for such an opportunity.
A sweeter boy you cannot imagine. He plays very well by himself, especially if his car is brought in from the garage into the living room. I’m quick to remind everyone “he IS an only child after all.” I, being an only child, can relate. We have a vivid imagination, we enjoy our own company and we don’t argue with ourselves.
This may change down the road, but even when Pierce is with his cousins, the three in California who are closest to his age, there is harmony. They love the little guy and he loves them – Addyson, Dax and Dax. It’s kind of like “Darryl and my other brother Darryl.” One of the Dax’s is really named Michael, but Perse prefers to call them by the same name. I wonder if it’s because Michael’s Dad’s name is Michael. They get called the same thing, so why not? It’s only a name.
GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
