By Mike VanZandt
Sweet Swinging Charlie Brannan did all he could do in the Sunday Scramble at the Ranch. Time after time he nailed his drives down the middle of the fairway. Laser like irons found green after green. He sank long putt after long putt and the ones he missed looked into the cup as they barely missed. Almost singlehandedly, Charlie birdied the tough Par 5 ninth hole. After his dazzling round, he found his team tied at 3 under par with the heavily favored team of Paul Williams, Jason Pettit, and Mike VanZandt. The playoff began at the third hole, a 145 yard Par 3 playing into a stiff breeze. Charlie managed to get his team up and down for par eight straight times, but the birdie putts kept missing by the slimmest of margins. Finally, despite Brannan’s stalwart play, VanZandt holed an improbable 45 foot putt to win the interminably long playoff on the eighth playoff hole. Tied at two over par, five shots back, were the teams of Shannon O’Brien, Robin Giddens, and Dewey Jones, and Mike Comeaux, Executive Golf Course Superintendent Mike Mitchell and Lance Ferguson.
