That statement always conjures up memories of The Wizard of Oz, one of my least favorite movies of all time! I remember my children would get so excited to see it every time it happened to come on TV (far too often). I would try to hide it from them, but the guilt would set in and I would give in. To not let them watch Oz would be like not reading them nursery rhymes when they were little, right? But for the life of me, I never could understand why they liked it so much with the creepy witch, the little scary munchkins, silly little Toto, who desperately needed a bath, and Auntie Em.
“No place like home.” My point was that I recently returned from a much needed vacation and it was so cold, 19 degrees, good golly! On the day I returned to Hobby Airport, dressed in a long-sleeved t-shirt, a flannel shirt over that and my heavy jacket, it was 80 degrees in Houston. Wow, people in shorts and short-sleeved shirts, the A/C on in the car, and a tall glass of ice water waiting for me when my husband picked me up!
Back to the beach, ah, a bit of Spring weather, just enough to tease you into thinking, “hey, maybe winter’s over!” Time to get out in the yard and pull weeds, get ready to plant that vegetable garden and start mowing the yard again. A full moon and a warm balmy night, sitting on the deck with a beverage, what more can you ask for?
Well, I’ll tell you “what more you can ask for,” is the sound of those lively grandkids I had left just hours prior. Way too quiet around here! I wonder if my daughter will let them watch that creepy movie??
GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
