The Spirit of Jane Long

By Linda Elissalde
Bolivar Peninsula has withstood many attacks. Many of them come from really, really bad weather. One of those who became a symbol of the strength and resilience of our peninsula is Jane Long. Thanks to the Spirit of Jane Long Anne Willis and Margo Johnson many more folk know about her. A major part of Jane’s story happened right here in 1821 because of problems with Karankawas, being left alone during a terrible, stormy winter and giving birth to one of the first Anglo American children in Texas that earned her title as THE MOTHER OF TEXAS. She later helped with the Texas Revolution against Mexico.

Jane Long’s spirit still survives with a Richmond, Texas elementary school and World War II Liberty Ship named in her honor.

Due to the efforts of the Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Arts Foundation (BPCF) and The Jane Long Society, a wonderful pavilion exists at Ft. Travis, and HWY 87 is the official Jane Long Memorial Highway.

BPCF hosts Dr. Ron Chesser’s outstanding presentation on August 21st at the Eagles. The late Anne Willis will also be honored for her contributions to the remembrance of Mother of Texas Jane Long and her resilience on Bolivar Peninsula.

Jane Long Represents “THE COURAGE OF THE PAST, THE JOY OF THE PRESENT AND THE HOPE FOR THE FUTURE!
