Every time I think about The Easter Bunny, I can just hear Clairee taking cracks at Weezer – Steel Magnolias. One of my favorite memories goes back to the 70’s when we would come here to the beach to visit the Grandparents. We had at least 2 children by then, combined with all the other siblings and however many they had, still a growing-by-leaps-and-bounds family. The Seahoose was small, but we all managed to pile into the open concept, one bathroom, a master bedroom for Mama and Bop and a small bedroom with a double bed.
When I first “married into” the family, we got the extra bedroom, then shortly after, my brother-in-law married and he and his wife got the little bedroom. That meant it was a scramble at night for someplace to sleep in the common room with the rest of the family.
Another Easter time, so the Easter Bunny hid the baskets, in all the non-obvious places, like behind the TV or behind shelves, in the game cabinet, under the table, you name it, the baskets were not in plain sight. I remember waking up early Sunday morning, hearing some scratching, scratching, I opened my eyes just a peep to see a little mouse sitting on his haunches by the TV with a jelly bean between his little hands, crunching away at the jelly bean like corn on the cob. I didn’t say a word, not even an eek – he really was kind of cute.
This Easter, PawPaw and I were up early, getting coffee, mainly because the 6 year old and the 4 year old woke us wanting to go downstairs to see where their baskets might be. Oops, no baskets, what on earth? They looked and looked, even went out to the garage, only to find nothing.
One of our chores for early dinner later in the day was to start the turkey, so PawPaw went out to the fridge in the garage and came back in carrying the dripping, thawed turkey and plopped it in the kitchen sink. Little Michael runs up to him expectantly, “Is that the Easter Bunny?” Just the thought … We laughed ’til we cried.
GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
