Something Special

Several years ago back when Ruby, our reddish Golden Retriever, still had 4 legs, we took a ride in the golf cart all the way down to Caplen in search of the perfect shell. It was a Sunday in early fall, a nice warm day, not a lot of wind. People were just rebuilding, there were new houses springing up everywhere. I hardly ever have to put Ruby on a leash, this being one of those times, as there was nobody around anyway. We were both in our searching and investigating mode and we’d become separated from each other, a pretty good distance. I wasn’t worried, she would always come to me when I called. This time, she saw a couple in the distance coming from the site of their new construction, crossing over a dune on their way to the beach. Nothing I could say or do caught her attention, she was intent on visiting them. They seemed very interested in her, too. You never know if someone might be afraid of dogs, I knew she wouldn’t do anything to harm them, but I found it necessary to go get her attention and be the go-between. Needless to say, she reached them and they reached her before I could get there. They were already making fast friends as I approached. We talked a bit and I noticed the woman was holding a metal box, so I asked if they were collecting something special to put in the box. “No,” she said, “these are the ashes of our golden retriever. She loved the beach so much, we wanted to leave her here.” Ruby must have known they had something special in that box.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
