Sing for your Supper

By Linda Elissalde
Evil Mr. Covid brought a cessation of The Family Sargents’ wonderful SING FOR YOUR SUPPER evenings. However, Covid could not keep this family from starting these deliciously delightful events again on July 27. Jean, “Sarge”, Mary Jean, and Anna Leigh Sargent provided another magical evening for all attendees.

The guests comprised a group of talented and interesting people. Some were professional singers. Others were very accomplished amateurs. Although Sing For Your Supper is the nom be plume of this grand affair, one may recite, play an instrument, ask for audience participation or make up a skit. Performances included show tunes, patriotic hymns, old favorites and camp tunes. Evie from New Jersey introduced everyone to a camp song about mean Johnny Verbeck. Listeners happily joined in the chorus. Pianist Mary Jean artfully accompanied anyone who needed assistance. Her former piano teacher, the incomparable Marjorie Rasche, delighted with a piece by Chopin. “Consider Yourself At Home” from Oliver performed by Jean and Anna Leigh ended the revue and led the guests to the dining room.

Over twenty diners gathered around a patriotic, decorated table. After singing the Doxology, dinner folk lined up to create heaping taco salads. Dessert was Anna Leigh’s homemade peach cobbler with ice cream. Needless to say, folk ate every bite while complimenting these exemplary cooks.

Guests left this grand, musical party with full tummies, grateful hearts and requests for another SING FOR YOUR SUPPER!
