Sea Turtle Heroes

The Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research recently held its “End of the Year Nesting Season” party. Sea Aggie Sea Turtle Patrollers enjoyed getting together at Galveston Island Brewing, which is a partner of the GCSTR. Honorees of the Sea Turtle Conservation Hero Awards included Crystal Beach residents Casey Reid, Karen and Ron Anderson, and Terry Trahan. These individuals made significant contributions to the conservation of sea turtles by patrolling the beach, participating in rescue and recovery, and assisting in nest response.

During this sea turtle nesting season which is April 1st – July 15th, over 18,000 miles of upper Texas coast beaches were patrolled in search of nests, with a specific focus on the critically endangered Kemp’s Ridley species. More than 350 volunteers contributed over 3,900 hours and completed 1,900 shifts. This program truly exemplifies a community effort in the conservation of sea turtles. For more information or volunteer opportunities please contact Paige Breon, the GCSTR Nesting Program Manager, at [email protected]. If you find a sea turtle on the beach, stranded or hooked on the pier, please call the 1-866-TURTLE-5 hotline so the GCSTR can respond.
