Oh to be a fly on the wall

We’ve been anticipating this event as long as they have – The Big Sur Half Marathon. This past weekend, my son and youngest daughter, both grown with children, entered this race – A half marathon for goodness sakes. That’s 13.1 miles! They’ve been training for the greater part of 6 months. We would follow their progress, “how far did you run today?” We would pray that Kelly’s shin splints would ease up. We would also pray that Matthew’s knees held up – two ACL’s on one leg and one on the other.

There couldn’t be a more scenic place. I mean if you have to be running, why not a little venture around the coastline of Monterey and Pacific Grove, about an hour’s drive north of Big Sur Park, along the rocky California coastline, from Cannery Row and Monterey Bay Aquarium to Point Pinos Lighthouse and Asilomar State Beach.

Dad and I kept thinking the race was Saturday, so we worried half the day, not hearing from them, only to realize we had the wrong day. Their time zone is 2 hours earlier than ours, so on Sunday, when we began getting pictures on our cell phones at about 10am our time, the anticipation rose. We were so relieved to find out they had both made it – one at 2 hrs-3 min. and the other at 2 hrs-38 min. Talk about a couple of proud parents!

When asked if they would run another, “heck yes!” In fact, I think it will be difficult for them to NOT be in a run – They also plan to run in the Texas Crab Festival Fun Run.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
