Reeling in the Memories

Kids’ Fishing Tournament Lights Up Bolivar Peninsula
On a breezy Saturday morning, Stingaree Marina buzzed with youthful energy as it hosted the Kids Hardhead Haul-In, a spirited part of the annual Stingaree Saltwater Slam Fishing Tournament. Sponsored by Gabourel Insurance and Lisotta Properties, this event drew in forty-seven enthusiastic little anglers, eager to showcase their angling skills.

Equipped with rods and reels generously donated by Forever Last and Rich Courville, the children, many of whom were casting their lines for the first time, fished off the marina dock from 8:30 to 10:00. With the assistance of dedicated parents and volunteers who expertly baited hooks and removed catches, the young anglers had a chance to experience the thrill of reeling in their very first fish.

While the official weigh-in station meticulously recorded the weights, it was the hardheads that counted towards prizes, although a diverse array of marine creatures made an appearance. Among the notable catches were a couple of keeper redfish, a massive black drum, and various other species, adding excitement to the already charged atmosphere.

Hardhead Haul-in Winners (L to R): Third Place-Jade Hernandez (.54 lb); Second Place-Pierce Osten (.55 lb); First Place-little Marty Broussard (1.30 lb)

Trophies gleamed as they were awarded for the first, second, and third largest hardheads, with an exceptional $500 scholarship bestowed upon the mini-angler who snagged the biggest one. The excitement didn’t end there, as five fortunate youngsters were drawn to receive a Texas Lifetime Fishing License, an honor that would undoubtedly fuel their passion for the sport.

Congratulations echoed throughout the marina, a testament to the youthful perseverance and the unwavering support of the community in fostering the love for fishing among the next generation.
