The project began when a group from Leadership Southeast Texas (LSET) decided that the Patton Cemetery, a nineteenth century pioneer graveyard, should be restored so it is recognizable as a cemetery (Related Story). There are six graves, and three remaining gravestones, in this 90×90 patch of ground behind the Fun Spot Water Slide. After the initial cleanup in March, the Bolivar Peninsula Lions Club agreed to maintain the grounds. Sporting gloves, long-sleeved shirts and boots, the Lions Club gathered a little after 10am on Sunday with weed wackers, mowers, rakes, and shovels loaded in the back of their pick-ups, ready to make a difference.
