Nostalgia

By Georgia Osten
We couldn’t have had a more glorious weekend than this past Labor Day weekend! The beach was packed with happy people enjoying our last big holiday of the year. It was a calm crowd from what I saw on our end of the beach, lots of families playing frisbee, washers, tossing the football, swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding. When sitting on the beach, it seems most of our time is spent facing the water, watching those out there swimming, constantly counting heads. Sometimes though, it’s fun to turn around to watch the constant parade of vehicles and wave at friends passing by. You can become mesmerized by all the activity going on around you.

All of a sudden, I’m taken back thirty-eight years or so as a big blue VW camper van rolls past me. You know, the one with jalousie windows? All these memories come crashing back in, I felt like I needed to stop the driver just to touch the seats and the steering wheel! Those were some easy going times. There was no A/C in this car, life was simpler back then. I’m reminded of trips to Perdernales Falls, Leigh playing on the bed in the back, her own personal playpen. I remember camping with a one year old. We would hug the walls of the camper to let her have free reign in the middle of the bed, she would wake if she touched another human being.

We were living here in Crystal Beach, running BayVue, every other week, we had the afternoons off. After nap time, we’d park the van on the beach and let Leigh run and play in the surf. Then, we’d have our dinner down on the beach. Returning home, we’d shower with the hose in the back yard – not too many neighbors to worry about back then …
We’ve come a long way since those Hippie Days with our Hippie Van, funny how an old VW van can trigger all those fond memories.

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
