Sunday night RR and I were having dinner in Galveston, it was Valentine’s and the restaurant was full. About half way through our meal RR said, “look around”, so I did. He said what do you see? I said people, and then I looked again, people having dinner with a loved one, but not really. With the exception of one other “older” couple, everyone was on a phone or something. No one was in conversation with their date. Don’t get me wrong, I love the convenience of texting and facebook but not on Valentine’s Day.
I have tried to understand the next several generations, but I fear for them. You must learn to look someone in the eye and communicate. They must be able to see you are hurt, mad or happy. How will they be able to talk a problem out or see that a situation is just silly and laugh together.
This past Saturday, our daughter had a luncheon and most of the family was able to attend. Not one cell phone or game was seen as we had dinner and enjoyed each other’s company. I was able to chat with two of our grandsons about what was going on in their lives and meet our oldest granddaughter’s man in her life. So Proud – he has manners.
I know I have touched on this subject before but how do we get true face to face communication across to them. What will happen if they need to give a speech or budget details for their department in the company. I’m not sure they can do it. If you cannot hear the tone in someone’s voice how can you answer the question?
Enough of that.
