Mitchell Cruises to Rare Win on Friday; Can’t Carry Comeaux and Ferguson Sunday

By Mike VanZandt
His golf game being held tenuously together by a combination of good luck and the improbable return of “Blue Thunder” to his bag, Head golf pro Mike Mitchell stunned six other golfers with a three over par 39 to capture the Friday skins game by one shot over Mike Comeaux. The steady elder Comeaux continues to shine around the greens with his short game. VanZandt has lost the form that carried him to many wins in January and settled into the pack with a five over par 41.
The big winners on Sunday were Shannon O’Brien and “the man without fear” Dewey Jones who shot two under par to win the two-man Sunday scramble by one shot over Dennis Whitmer and Howard Porteous. Porteous and Whitmet double bogied the difficult 8th hole, often called the hardest Par 3 in Southeast Texas. The double bogey took the charm off a nice eagle at the short Par 5- 4th hole and a fine birdie two on the Road Hole 3rd.

Legacy Agro-American-to-be, beefcake, multi-sport High Island Senior athlete/scholar Jentry Weisinger was quite the fashion statement Sunday with his black skin tight leggings protecting his tender skin from the elements under a pair of grey knee length Bermuda shorts. Comeaux continued his fine wedge play with a pair of chip in birdies to overcome Weisinger’s wild drives and poor approach shots. A double bogey on number six kept Mike Mitchell, Aaron Comeaux and Lance Ferguson tied with VanZandt and Alan Lind. As usual, Lind led the tournament in beers consumed per hole with the hard charging VanZandt a close second. Lind is to be complimented on his fine beer management Sunday, arriving at the 11:00 a.m. tee time with a nearly full twelve pack of Bud Light following Saturday’s Mardi Gras Festivities, which had to be hard on a fella’s beer supply. Congratulations Alan.
