Mitchell, Harrison Ride Jones to Victory
(Sunday, Feb 24) One under par after eight holes, Mike Mitchell and Dabney Harrison watched in glee as Dewey Jones, man without fear, stepped up to a thirty foot long putt and calmly stroked it into the hole for a tournament winning eagle. The team of Mike VanZandt, Charlie Brannan, and Aaron Comeaux three putted their last hole for a bogey to drop to two under par and allow Jones to win for the third consecutive week in the Sunday Scramble. Shannon O’Brien, Jason Pettit and Joe Ball fired a one under par 35 to beat Mike Comeaux, Brian, and Will Armstrong by one shot.
In the afternoon skins game, Shannon O’Brien shot 38 to capture low score by one shot. Dabney Harrison captured one skin and Mike VanZandt won three to wind up Sunday’s action. Former Ranch Pro Emmitt Hulsey is rumored to be moving back to the Peninsula to take advantage of the senior tees and share the Sunday cash with Jones.
Golf etiquette requires that you be quiet while your opponent plays his shot. The slightest sound can distract some golfers and cause them to hit a poor shot. Some golfers are especially sensitive to sounds. These golfers are said to have rabbit ears. There is no cure for a golfer with rabbit ears. Songbirds, pets, cars and even airplanes flying overhead can offend the afflicted. All golfers should try to remain quiet when the rabbit eared play their shots so that they can have nothing to blame but their lack of ability for their misfires.
Mitchell Wins Two Skins on 61st Birthday;
VanZandt Edges O’Brien at Chambers County
(Friday, Feb 22) Head golf-pro Mike Mitchell broke even on his birthday Friday at Chambers County Golf Course with two skins. Mitchell shot 86 on a wet golf course to edge former Ranch head golf-pro Emmitt Hulsey by two shots. It was probably the last time Hulsey will tee it up from the regular tees as his advancing age and weight have severely shortened his length off the tee. Playing with Howard Porteous (who shot a respectable 95) and Michael Comeaux (with a not so respectable 92), the threesome was horrible on the four par-five holes at Chambers County, shooting a combined eighteen strokes over par. Honesty compels reporting that Porteous, Comeaux, and Hulsey were skunked in the skins game while Mike VanZandt had four and Mitchell, Dewey Jones and Shannon O’Brien had two each.
The story of the day at Chambers County was the ageless Dewey Jones who won the 9th hole with a par and birdied the 18th hole on his way to a nice 88. VanZandt birdied #4, Mitchell #7, and O’Brien #17. In addition to the skins game, where you have to win a hole by yourself to cash, the seven golfers also played low score. VanZandt won the first nine with a 41. O’Brien won the second nine with a nice 39. VanZandt edged O’Brien by one shot 81-82 for the day.
Join us at the Ranch on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. for the Par 3 contests and on Sunday for the long running traditional scramble at 11:00 a.m.
