Garry Horn, Jentry Weisinger, and Mike VanZandt shot a fine 4 under par 32 to best Michael Comeaux, Dabney Harrison, and Larry Johnson by one shot Sunday. Finishing one shot further back were John Milby, Charles Brannon, and super-senior Will Armstrong. Horn’s drive to the corner on #9 set up the short hitting VanZandt’s precise seven iron from 125 yards to two feet for a tap in eagle to highlight the round. High Island High School Senior Hunk Jentry Weisinger almost aced the difficult 139 yard par 3 eighth, landing a mere six inches from the cup for a gimme birdie on his own ball.
Following Sunday morning’s scramble, ten golfers teed it up to determine an individual champion. Larry Johnson lapsed the field with a super one-under par 35, beating Mike VanZandt by 3 shots and Shannon O’Brien by four. VanZandt’s eagle chip on 9 glanced off the pin for a tap in birdie that joined two other birdies to overcome a double bogey and three bogies. Unfortunate Shannon O’Brien left his 40 foot birdie putt on 9 woefully short and three putted for a bogey to fall out of the money. Tough break there Shannon.
Head Golf Pro, Par 3 Architect, and Course Superintendent Mike Mitchell, took a few well deserved days off during holidays. A special thanks goes out to Russ Berge for filling in during his absence. Everyone hopes Mitchell and his golf game both return soon.
