Lack of Storage

By Georgia Osten
I don’t know what it is about our storage situation since we relocated to the beach back in 2011. I remember going through all our stuff from 20+ years living in Sugar Land when we decided we were going to live at the beach eventually. We were both ready to retire and we had just recently had our beach house rebuilt since Ike. We (I) dearly loved our beach house, the one Ike destroyed. I guess it was a blessing once we saw the exposed way our little house had been built. But I still miss it. The way it smelled, the way it welcomed us back week after week. My dog at the time, Ruby, and I would head out every Friday to the beach. We would park in our beach house driveway, and we wouldn’t even take time to put anything away. We’d grab the golf cart and head for our beloved beach.

That’s right, I was going to talk about lack of storage, I got carried away and I totally lost my path. As we prepared to make the big move, we organized our “stuff” in an effort to keep everything. The new house was built with plenty of closets, and the kitchen with plenty of cabinets. It’s still never been enough. We built a closet to hold the elevator, but we never put the elevator in, so it became storage. It’s pretty well climate-controlled, so it’s a great place for all our stash of pictures from years and years, and who knows what else.

Ten years ago, I thought that someday I’d organize all those pictures, but never have. I’ve had to go through that stuff from time to time, when our grownup kids would ask for something that lives in their baby books. Yes, they’re in their 40’s and I still have their baby books.

Under the bed became storage for as many things as I could stuff in those plastic boxes to shove away, out of sight. Well, out of sight, out of mind. I’ve recently come across boxes with fabric, patterns, zippers, buttons, you name it. I have a friend who makes doll clothes, so I’ve passed on those patterns and she’s taken some fabric scraps. But mostly, she took a lot over to Janet’s shop.

Other than drapes for my oldest daughter, I haven’t done much sewing. I’m trying to get interested in it again, mainly dresses I might wear after a day at the beach or a day in the pool.

With the weather turning out so beautiful, I can’t seem to make myself sit indoors on the sewing machine. I find it quite tedious too, so we’ll see how long this lasts.
