Jane Long, “The Mother of Texas”

As the breeze was blowing off the Gulf, across the end of Bolivar Peninsula, hundreds of people flocked to the Third Annual Jane Long Festival on Saturday, October 13th, sponsored by the Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation. Fort Travis Seashore Park was the perfect setting for a fantastic day, beginning at 10 am, with the dedication and unveiling of the Jane Long Monument.

After the dedication, Cody VanZandt started off the festival on stage with the Jane Long song. The stage stayed active with musical entertainment by 3-Way Switch, often interrupted when a gunfight would happen without warning. Helen Mooty, director of the Galveston County Museum, portrayed Jane Long. Jane, the feisty pioneer woman, told the story of her life, her hardships, fighting off the Indians, raising her red petticoat as a flag, and giving birth to her third child against the brutal winter elements.
