The Jane Long Society celebrated the completion of its third successful JANE LONG FESTIVAL. Participants partied together at Vicki and Wayne Mouton’s beautiful home on Sunday, November 4, 2012.
The 2012 Jane Long Spirit Award was presented to Dr. Melanie Wallace. Dr. Wallace created the Jane Long Lectures in 2011 and continued to head them up this year. Melanie not only provided the speakers for each program, but also was a main contributor to the food, beverages and special gifts for each event. Everyone agreed that she was the perfect choice for this award. Congratulations, Dr. Melanie Wallace!
The society thanked Doug Wind for his help with the arrangement of booths and planning of the Jane Long stage. Wayne Mouton, along with his crew, received special recognition for building this theatrical edifice. It has already been used for an Easter Sunrise Service. Bands, dancers, poets, writers and speakers all used it to great advantage during this year’s festival.
Margo Johnson and Anne Willis shared a dream of honoring Jane Long, The Mother of Texas. Jane Long symbolizes the spirit of survival that imbues the Bolivar Peninsula. Margo and Anne led the way, starting in the fall of 2010, for a group of enthusiastic volunteers to provide a yearly endeavor. Due to their efforts, and with help from local and state officials, the peninsula proudly boasts of The Jane Long Pavilion that stands in front of Fort Travis. The Jane Long Highway will soon take the place of Hwy 87. Anne continues to work for a ferry to be named after this strong woman who serves as an example of the true Texas pioneer.
The Jane Long Society enjoyed their well-deserved afternoon celebration of food and drink. They are already looking forward to, and planning for, the next Jane Long Festival. It will be on the second Saturday in October, 2013. Mark that date. You don’t want to miss it!
Jane Long represents the courage of the past, the joy of the present, and the hope for the future.
This was the first year that my husband and I attended the festival. We thoroughly enjoyed the music, food and the many booths. A highlight for us was touring the Fort Travis bunkers. Thanks for all of your hard work.
