Was there ever a child with a spoon and a pail who did not love to dig in the sand at the beach? Once upon a time it could be just an old metal bucket and a spoon sneaked out of mom’s utensil drawer. If you just kept digging, you believed you would come out on the other side of the world in China. Many adults still find magic in taking a spade to poke into dunes. Today there are elaborate buckets, shovels, and molds for well-crafted beach formations. A person can create artistry worthy of competition.
Digging holes in the sand is a wonderful adventure. It is fun to dig. BUT, what about leaving those holes when one is through? There does not seem much enthusiasm in putting sand back from whence it came. Large holes, and small ones, left uncovered cause accidents. Some are serious. Carts bounce into holes. People get knocked out of the back seats. Runners step into one and twist an ankle or even fall. Holes pose special dangers at night for walkers and cars. Some are so large that it takes paid professionals to come and fill them back up.
Several statements on GOOGLE point out problems left by unfilled holes. “In addition to endangering beachgoers, who fall into holes, they can also pose a threat to lifeguards and wildlife like nesting sea turtles. Not only that, but digging deep holes can contribute to ongoing problems with beach erosion.”
It is time to stroll.
Please take a moment before you go,
And carefully fill up each hole.
