Artist Boat has had past success with the Habitat Restoration Adventure, which has restored 22 acres of dune habitat along Follet’s Island in Brazoria County and Galveston Island. This was accomplished with 4,000 students participating in the Habitat Restoration Adventures, who learned how to plant dune plants, about the local ecosystems of Galveston Bay, and how to be a good steward of the earth.
Upper Texas Coast Dune Restoration Outreach Program
• Involving local k-12th grade students in stewardship activities
• Planting native dune plants that are beneficial to wildlife
• Increasing nesting habitat for endangered species on our coast
• Provides stable dune structures to protect people and property from storm events
• Increase environmental knowledge through education activities
• Improve awareness of environmental responsibilities
• Involve the community to improve our natural ecosystems
Why: Our dunes need your help recovering from the devastating effects of Ike in addition to constant erosion from man and natural causes! The function of our dunes serves not only as physical barrier protection, but as essential habitat to a variety of species including nests for the endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtle and the Wilson’s plover.
What: Opportunity for students and the community to engage as coastal stewards through participating in the Habitat Restoration Adventures. During the adventures we will be planting a variety of native dune plants, which include seaoats, bitter panicum, railroad vine, sea purslane, and marsh-hay cordgrass.
Where: Artist Boat’s goal is to restore up to 10 acres of dune habitat on Bolivar Peninsula and 10 acres of dune habitat on Galveston Island.
How Can You Help? Artist Boat’s goal is to restore important dune habitat with the community on Bolivar Peninsula. Therefore we are looking for land/property owners (for permission to plant on their property), schools or youth groups wanting to participate in the program, funding for bus transportation or lunches, community involvement during public workdays, and anything else.
