Galveston County Museum (GCM) is a perfect example of Aesop’s saying. It serves as a depository of wonderful treasures in a small space. The size adds to this museum’s charm. GCM was housed in historic Moody National Bank until 2008 when it was badly damaged by Hurricane IKE. Now the museum’s home is Old Galveston County Courthouse, 722 Moody, Galveston, TX. Exhibits include artifacts and stories of the 1900 Storm, military history of the county, Mardi Gras costumes, architecture, archeology, religion and much more.
Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation (BPCF) made a trip over the pond to visit this acclaimed venue. When you enter Galveston County Courthouse you are met with many interesting antiquities and displays about Galveston history. BPCF booked a 10:00 AM tour with Director Jodi Wright-Gidley. Jodi is a small, lovely and informative hostess. We gathered to hear her introduction to-and background of-GCM. Then we were invited to roam about with Ms. Wright-Gidley close by to answer our questions. We enjoyed all the displays. Areas contained Bolivar Peninsula and Ft. Travis memorabilia so some of our fellow BPCF members added even more information. Ten year old Brelynne Bohannan was fascinated with items that were familiar to us, but used way before she was born. She discovered a stereoscope and enjoyed explaining to us how to use the device. This was a delightful tour from arrival to departure. Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation outings usually end with food. We joined up again at Coastal Grill on The Strand. Attendees shared generous entrees and brought bits back home. Sadly, good things do come to an end, but we left with plans to return and bring family and friends with us. Galveston County Museum proves Aesop’s adage, “GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES.”
GCM is open to all visitors Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. Admission is Free! Call 409-766-2340 if you wish to schedule a private event or tour, inquire about donating artifacts, conduct research or for more information.
