By Mike VanZandt
The 5:00 Tuesday/Thursday Par 3 contests at the Ranch have been frustrating local golfers since October of 2012. The lowest score (shot by numerous golfers) has been one over par. On Tuesday, August 13, Mike VanZandt won low score with a 6 over par round of 33. All the golfers pitch in $10 each, with ten dollars going to the winner and the balance into the skins pot. To win a skin, you have to have the sole lowest score on a hole. Two tie, all tie. Lucky-assed Shannon O’Brien shot a nine over par 36 but his par on the second hole was the only skin of the day, sending him home with $80.00. John Milby and Mike Comeaux had 34’s, Dabney Harrison led after 6 holes but three consecutive double bogies sent him home shaking his head. Paul Williams, playing in his first Par 3 event, was tied with Harrison for the lead after 5 holes, but doubled bogied the last four holes to finish at 12 over par. Mike Mitchell had a chance to win but double bogied the final hole to finish himself off. Sweet Charlie Brannan, who boasts one of the prettier golf swings at the Ranch, had trouble on the dry, fast greens and shot a career high 40.
