FAN-tastic

By Linda Elissalde
PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE is the wonderful slogan mounted above a door in Seaside Lumber Company. Nowhere is this more true than in Southeast Texas and on the Bolivar Peninsula. Examples abound all along our coast. Entergy Texas, Inc. gifted Texas Crab Festival Charities with a grant of $1000 as a contribution to “Fans for the Community due to excessive heat” program. Seaside Lumber added another $500. This resulted in the purchase of 50 Lasko fans for people who require them during the hottest summer on record.

How do these fans reach folk who need them? President of Texas Crab Festival Charities Tom Osten phoned Gerry Lang. Gerry touched base with Crystal Beach Community Church, and they formed a committee to discover who was in need. Church members will deliver them. Brenda Flanagan who has done so much good for our peninsula placed the news on Facebook and also personally helped individuals. What next?

Fans were delivered to Seaside Lumber by July 27 and Danny Norrid unloaded these generous presents. Entergy representatives Karen Do, Jim Malain, Michelle Armstrong, Crab Fest’s Mark De Santis, Seaside Lumber owner Colt Thomas, Community Church volunteer Tammy Miller along with Brenda and Tom came to help with the distribution. Michelle explained that this endeavor was just a small part of Entergy’s plans to help communities. This was their first effort on our peninsula, but definitely not the last. Entergy has many more helpful objectives in store for Bolivar. For a finale everyone including Sabrina Bobino transported the blowers to Community Church and formed a line to transfer all the fans. Please call Community Church, (409) 684-1030 or Tammy Miller, (409) 277-9785 if you need a fine box fan to cool your residence.

Individuals from different groups banded together to help others- PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE. Only one word can describe it – FANTASTIC!
