David Watts, candidate for Texas Land Commissioner, was in Crystal Beach the other day to visit with concerned residents about the closure of Rollover Pass. About 35 people were in attendance. Watts admitted he knew nothing about Rollover Pass just a few weeks ago, but has since done research into the issue and feels the closure is a “bad deal”. He stated, “I’m opposed to the closure. Currently, Commissioner Patterson seems to be doing everything he can to close the Pass. My feeling is, do everything we can to keep it open. Find a way, there is a way.”
Watts questioned whether the closure of Rollover Pass was a foregone conclusion. He cited several examples from the actual application filed with the Corps of Engineers referring to unreliable studies, vague estimates and questionable modeling. “It is clear to me, somebody made a decision, we are going to close that thing and here is money, do a study and prove me right.”
If elected, Watts promises to put it all on hold and explore options to keep the Pass open. The law does not require the pass to be closed, it just authorizes it.
He further stated more political clout would be helpful. A possible ally is Todd Staples, current Agriculture Commissioner, running against Jerry Patterson for Lieutenant Governor. His office number is 512-912-1603. “Call his office every day for the next week…why not?”
Keep Roll Over Pass open, It’s the only true Recreation Facility that you can truly be assured to rest, enjoy, and catch fish at the same time! If anything, make it more accessible for RV hook ups. I think Roll Over Pass is the Idea place for a short relaxing vacation for lot of people and surrounding cities. Closin this facility would definitely be a great lost to the people, as well as a great lost to the Economic prosperity of Crystal Beach!
