Not so much this year, just a few days, but there have been years that not man or beast should be outside. Of course, my Mom was baptized in the river in Austin in February – that was the first time she had pneumonia. Dad was not a big talker but I can only guess how cold it was in Montana or Colorado mountains deer hunting.
There were usually three men heading northwest. Dad had a WWII trailer and a 1950 Chevy, 2-door, and off they went. In this very small trailer, there were sleeping bags, some food, such as canned goods and canned fruit and some canned meats, and cooking utensils. You did not need refrigeration for leftovers as it was freezing day and night.
Uncle Henry, my Momma’s brother, worked at the Houston Bus Service, so when there were left over materials from making cushions, he would save them instead of tossing them out. The cushion he made fit the trailer side to side and top to bottom, as the bottom of the trailer was metal and cold. It truly was a cushion of many colors, but very warm.
When I was carrying our first daughter, we would head up to the farm so RR could deer hunt with Dad. One time, I insisted on going with RR and Dad hunting, it was so cold that spit froze on the way down from the tree. You see, deer hunting was a sport Dad and I enjoyed as I was growing up. He would take me to the hill country for a day or two hunt. Never to Montana or Colorado! So the men said “OK, you have your own hunting bag and gun, put it together and let’s go”. I did not have the proper winter clothing for 20 degree weather, but I was not backing down. Even with many layers of pants and tops, I froze! Just before noon, I could hardly walk back to the house I was so cold, but I never said a word. Stubborn and hard headed (even back then)!
I should have known the year RR and I met on the Salt Grass Trail. It was the first and only year the parade was canceled because of weather. It was called an Ice Storm!
Would you call that a Cold Day In H___?
I really had racked my brain what to write about this week, and most of this was a lot of babbling in my cabin fever brain!
