Chernobyl aftermath

By Elinor Tinsley
The Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation would like to thank all of you that were able to come out for Dr. Ron Chesser’s presentation, The Aftermath of the Chernobyl Explosion, last Wednesday, August 21,2024 at the Eagles. Attendance was good but probably a little less than it could have been due to the rescheduling from Hurricane Beryl. We would also like to thank the generosity of the Eagles 3719, and especially Nathan Ramsey for all of his help in setting up and cleaning up. Our workers included the BPCF board, Vicky Norris, Sherry Morgan, Elinor Tinsley, Marsha Fredenburg, Linda Chesser and Sandi Covington. Our VP, Ange Scheibel was unable to attend due to the death of her mother-in-law. Please keep Ange and her family in your prayers. Additional worker bees were the great Amy Lail and her husband Harvey, Pat Tinsley and least we not forget our photographer and great helper, Linda Elissalde and her husband Marcel. Also, thanks to Tiny from the Eagles who made us that great iced tea.

Check-in began at 5:30 PM, and by 6:00 PM everyone had a plate of tasty appetizers and desserts and a beverage in hand and found a seat to start finding out some of what you probably never knew about nuclear fusion and the Chernobyl explosion of April 26, 1986. Dr. Chesser was highly knowledgeable on the subject, not to mention a WHOLE lot of other subjects, and with his charming canter, was able to explain how nuclear reactions and nuclear fusions take place and how a reactor should and shouldn’t work. He was able to explain it in a way that even this non-scientific person was able to understand it, as I believe many others were able to also.

After Ron’s presentation and a question and answer period we honored our dear friend and past president and vice president, Anne Willis by toasting her name and by singing happy birthday to her beloved Jane Long, who would have celebrated her 226th birthday. We concluded the evening by giving away a $50 Salty Mermaid and $50 Tia Juanita’s gift card, presenting Dr. Ron a $100 Tia Juanita gift card, presenting the Eagles 3719 with a $100 check for their hospitality and by offering leftovers and desserts for departing guests. Many thanks again to all that helped our evening be a great success and many thanks again to Dr. Ron Chesser for his presentation.

Don’t forget to put on your calendar our next event, our Fall Arts & Crafts Fair on September 21, 2024 from 10 – 3, at the Pavilion at Swede’s Park on Hwy 87. With 36 vendors, food available from the Eagles, entertainment from our local, The Girl Band and lots more, there’s something for everyone. Come out and get your holiday shopping started!

Thank you, Elinor, for this fine article. Once again BPCF did an outstanding job. Dr. Ron Chesser was a magnificent speaker. His explanation of the Chernobyl disaster and the reasons for it made the terrible event understandable. Not only does this fine man have many well deserved awards and titles, he is also a fantastic teacher. We all learned so much.
