Bolivar Mardi Gras 2012 went off without a hitch – sort of. Due to one of the heaviest rain storms and flooding we’ve had this year, the parade, which was supposed to begin at 11:30am, was first postponed until 12:30pm. As radar proved the rain wasn’t about to stop, the parade was postponed again until 2:30pm. Finally, the skies began to lighten up and the rain stopped. All participants began to gather at Avocet Subdivision, where they were guided to their “spot” in line with the rest of the floats, trucks, golf carts – whatever vehicle was registered. Everyone was dressed up and all floats were brightly decorated to the Mardi Gras theme of “Heros & Villains.” The parade began between 2:30 and 3:00pm, slowly proceeding east on Hwy. 87 toward Crystal Beach. The crowds were phenomenal, the children bundled to keep warm, pets donned beads, and folks of all ages were smiling, hooting and hollering. Along the route, people thronged – in some places 5-10 rows deep along each side of the highway – past Ships Wheel, Tiki Bar, Latitude, Dannay’s, Pat’s, Family Dollar, you name it, everyone came out! The parade traversed all the way down to Gregory Park where the floats were guided into the park to get off the highway approximately 2 hours later. Tiki Bar hosted the awards program and provided trophies.
