No man on the peninsula is loved more than Jerry Valentine, in my humble opinion, and my own pastor, Dennis Allen, of First Baptist Church of Port Bolivar, refers to Brother Valentine as “the spiritual leader of Bolivar Peninsula.” Even those who never enter the doors of any church or claim any faith, feel that Jerry Valentine is their pastor. From a quick word of encouragement spoken in genuine love at The Big Store, to a friendly hello at the newly refurbished golf course in Crystal Beach, or from behind the pulpit, this man emits the love of Christ to all he meets.
He is now suffering with advanced stages of cancer and hearts are hurting everywhere he is loved and admired. Prayers are being prayed all over the world for him and his church members and friends have demonstrated to his family how much they mean to each person they come into contact with. This week, Jerry was placed into Hospice care to help ease the ever-increasing pain and he was prescribed morphine to help dull the edges of the sharp intrusions into his tired body. A hospital bed was delivered to the home and he is sleeping when the medicine takes effect.
Debbie and Jerri are trying to maintain as much normalcy as possible and deeply appreciate every expression of love and concern for their family. “I cook, I clean, and I try to keep going as much as possible,” said Debbie to a friend. “Keeping busy helps me keep sane. I know God is in control, but this is difficult.”
Please, folks, keep this family in your prayers and ask your friends to join you in seeking God’s will for the Valentines, whom we all love.
