Animal Resource Center Open House

The Galveston County Health District’s Animal Resource Center (ARC) will be hosting an open house on Tuesday, July 23rd. The event is set for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the ARC facility in Texas City at 3412 Loop 197 North. The open house will be an opportunity for the public to meet and discuss ideas with staff, sign up to be a pet foster home, STAR (Striving to Treat Animals with Respect) volunteer and more. There will be door prizes and refreshments.

The Galveston County Animal Resource Center currently has more than 500 animals awaiting adoption. During the open house visitors looking to adopt a dog will be able to meet the animals and have an opportunity to interact with them in one of the ARC’s outside meet and greet areas. It is a great way to make sure everyone gets to take home the perfect loving companion.

There are also many great cats waiting for homes and cat colony rooms where people may socialize with many cats in order to find that “purrfect” new family member.

ARC is striving to find homes for animals by working with animal rescue groups. The open house will be an opportunity for these groups to register and assist the ARC by taking animals they feel will be able to be placed in good homes.
The Animal Alliance of Galveston County is offering a 50% discount, as long as funds are available, to rescue groups who remove animals from the ARC on the usual veterinary services needed for adoption. The reduced cost care is being offered to increase the number of adoptions at the ARC.

Pet registrations will also be available during the open house for those visitors with pets from the ARC’s service area. There are many times when a pet can quickly slip through an open door or gate unnoticed. Pet registration is their ticket home.

The Animal Resource Center’s normal adoption rate is $85, but for the time being animal adoptions are available for a reduced rate of $42.50 or two for $85. The price includes spay/neutering, rabies vaccination and microchip.

Generous Donor Provides for 50 Free Adoptions

Due to a generous donation from Houston’s Randy Hartley, the Galveston County Animal Resource Center (ARC) is pleased to announce they will be able to offer 50 free pet adoptions to the public. Mr. Hartley made the donation after hearing about the large number of animals at the facility looking for a home. He hopes the funds will make that a reality for at least 50 pets.

Starting at 12 noon on July 19th pet adoptions at the ARC will be free until the 50th animal is adopted. After that the fee will return to the current special half price rate of $42.50. Included in all adoptions is spay/neutering, rabies vaccination and microchip.

“This generous donation is greatly appreciated,” says Kurt Koopmann, Galveston County Health District Public Information Officer. “In our overcrowded condition we appreciate Mr. Hartley and those like him who help us in promote adoptions.” For more information, call ARC at (409) 948-2485.
