Mary Ellen Smith may not be misbehaving, but she is still having fun. Marvelous Mary Ellen represents all that is best in our Bolivar community. She served in many capacities while here and was the first Bolivar Realtor elected President of the Galveston Association of Realtors. Although she now lives in Richmond, Texas, Ms. Smith still has contact with her numerous Bolivar Peninsula friends.
ME, as her buddies call her, turns 80 on September 26, 2022. Dr. Melanie and Mack Wallace, Marcel Elissalde and I decided to celebrate the occasion. The five friends met at Diana American Grill in Hobby Center on Sunday. They enjoyed a delicious repast delivered by entertaining server Rudy. Of course there had to be cake and a rousing, if not necessarily tuneful, rendering of “Happy Birthday to You”. Melanie presented our honoree with a bunch of her cleverly created birthday cards. Then we headed downstairs to view the Fats Waller musical AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’. A most talented group sang and danced to Mr. Waller’s tunes. We hummed along with a few old favorites such as the title tune and “Honeysuckle Rose”, “Keepin’ out of Mischief”, “I Can’t Give you Anything but Love”, and “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie”. There were many more delightful numbers in the show that ended with a well deserved standing ovation.
We sadly bid farewell after sharing a wonderful time with our dear friend ME. While we appreciate sharing fond memories, it is always a pleasure to create new ones. We AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’ and do not plan to do so, but as Fats Waller’s famous farewell declares, “One never knows, do one?”
