Ah, the world of technology!

As I sit here at my computer, I have all the faith in the world that everything will keep working. I mean, it’s a computer for goodness sakes. I remember those days at work with Corporate America – if something didn’t work, you called IT. They would connect remotely to your computer and start running through your programs, as you sit there and watch your screen jumping around before your very eyes. All of a sudden, Shish-Boom-Ba, and your computer is fixed – it’s magic.

So, the other day, after having a DEAD computer for almost a week, I bundled it up, bagged it, and delivered it to the Geek Squad. I told the nice Geek dressed in a white shirt, black tie and black slacks, wearing a pair of horn-rimmed black glasses, “my computer is not responding.” That was putting it lightly – I couldn’t complete an email on Yahoo, I couldn’t log into any websites, I couldn’t find my bank account … The only thing I could do was Facebook and my MahJong game. I know, not very productive. I have no idea what I have in my bank account, which is pretty serious, because I just did a Nutcracker Market Marathon yesterday. No telling what a disaster that bank account might be.

So, I visited the Geeks and they plugged everything in as I was describing what a bungled mess everything was. As I’m telling them I can’t get my mail on Yahoo, they proceed to pull it up – clear as a bell. I begin to sweat a bit as I ask “try this website.” Bam! There it is! I didn’t want to show them my bank account because they might not have accepted my computer.

At this point, I said, “hey, I’m leaving it, see what you can find.” Three days later and $200 for their year’s warranty, I have this machine back. The $200 means I can call them any time and they’ll take control of my computer, and I can watch it jump around right in front of my eyes. Not that I want that to happen, but it does give me a sense of protection.

All this being said, I actually HAVE been working on this entire article without this system shutting down, maybe we’re on a roll??

GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
