This time of year can offer some of the best fishing of the year with the fish in schools chasing pods of bait that are plentiful in the bay. Keying on slicks and active diving gulls can make locating the feeding schools of fish easier. Even when the birds leave, just stay put and watch for shrimp skipping out of the water to get away from hungry trout. Stay as far away as possible from the activity to get hits but not spook the fish. Sometimes the bigger fish will be on the outside edge of all the action and can be targeted with topwaters like a bone spook. We have started weekly fronts now and with that, the north shore of East Bay has been good working slicks. Areas from Whitehead to Deep Reef and toward the east will be a good start to begin looking. In other areas, reports of good catches have come from Moses Lake over shell and pier pilings around the Sylvan Beach area.
The surf is still hot with the fronts and producing good catches of large reds, speckled trout and still some sharks. Contributing to our report is Captain Steve Brown with galvestonfishingcharters.com. He is one of the best and picks up in Bolivar too.
On Lake Conroe, the water is clearing up now from the turn over and the crappie are beginning to turn on, suspended around brush in 14-20 ft range. Channel and Blue cats have been excellent and hybrids are starting to be more active with the moving schools of shad.
