The Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department BBQ Cookoff celebrated its 22nd year this weekend, hosting another successful cookoff raising funds to help purchase a new fire truck. The 20 teams competed, beginning with the Friday night winner-takes-all Fajita contest. Then early Saturday morning, the cook teams fired up their pits to compete in the various categories of brisket, ribs, chicken, and beans. While the pits were smoking, several teams entered the Bloody Mary contest. It was an array of tomato juice and spirits, topped with veggies and other edible decor. As the cookers prepared their entries throughout the day, visitors enjoyed BBQ plates prepared by the fire department cooks. All the while, a silent auction and raffles items were viewed. Teams of judges selected for each category had a tough time narrowing down their tasty choices. Promptly at 6 pm, “Big Daddy” Flanagan started the live auction with over 50 donated items bringing in thousands of dollars for the VFD. Throughout the auction, team winners were announced …
