Daylight Savings

Georgia's Sand BucketBy Georgia Osten
At first, in October or November when we “Fall Back,” I’m up bright and early and actually make it to work on time, sometimes early. Just when I get to the point where I’m failing at waking up early from the change in the Fall, the dang time changes again! Now, I’m really in a pickle! This past Saturday, snuck up on us. First time I woke up Sunday morning, it was 6:30am according to my bedside clock. I thought, “it’s Sunday, just go back to sleep,” which I did. Next time I woke up it was 7:41am according to my bedside clock. I did my little “wake up whistle,” and my husband came into the bedroom as usual. “Are you going for the record,” he asked. That’s when he informed me it was almost 9 o’clock!

I don’t mind evenings and more daylight, but it sure makes routines difficult. Now, we’ll be eating dinner later. It just happens, I’m not prepared to begin cooking so early. Dinners may not happen until 8pm now. I know, the more daylight, the more time I’ll have to work in the garden, What garden?

Oh, and this way, we conserve candles, that’s what they came up with in the late 1700’s by Benjamin Franklin of all people! So, tell me, why doesn’t Everyone follow DST? Thank goodness our computers and most watches know the difference and go ahead and reset for us.

I’ll tell you one thing DST is good for – It’s time to replace those batteries in your smoke alarms.
