Oh, what a weekend it was! Pierce and his Dad showed up on Friday night ready for the hunt the next morning. Of course, Grandma made red Jello, but dinner first. We were having chili, but I made chicken strips and mac & cheese for Pierce. Well, as it turns out, he didn’t like “that kind” of mac & cheese. Is it his brothers who like it? I can’t remember. The Jello was a hit! He proceeded to build mansions with the building blocks while the grown-ups shared wine and stories.
Joe, our good buddy from Dallas, showed up with Cody, his 5-year-old yellow lab. Cody has been through extensive training as a hunting dog for practically all his life. Saturday’s hunt was to be Cody’s first time “out in the field,” so to speak.
I was a bit skeptical about Cody coming to visit, thinking he would be too aggressive with my laid back golden retriever, Maezy. Turns out, they became quite good friends. Cody was quite a bit faster than Maezy when it came to chasing the tennis ball, but she’s known for awhile she’s not the quickest retriever on the block. My husband calls her a Golden Non-Retriever. She’s fine with that. She makes up for it by bullying the tennis ball away from the Fast Go-Getter.
Wake up on Saturday was 4am. Needless to say, I didn’t rise to see them off, nor did I prepare breakfast. As they hunted, I kept receiving pictures of their successes. Wow, my mouth was watering for some good ol’ duck gumbo!
I planned my grocery trip into Galveston, the Lone Star Rally wasn’t scaring me! I planned my trip down Broadway and on the way home, I kept on a one-way street all the way through town until I could get back to the ferry. My trip was enjoyable, some “colorful” sights to see, I managed to get a candid picture of a young lady at WalMart to send to my daughters. Just to show them what they were missing. Thank goodness she didn’t see me taking her picture, she wasn’t the type I wanted or needed to tangle with.
The hunters were back when I got home with all their cleaned kill. As it turned out Cody’s maiden voyage was a success. He knew exactly what to do when a duck went down, he responded fabulously!
The guys went to Tiki for lunch and left Cody in the truck with the cleaned ducks! Need I explain? When they came back out to the truck, 2 ½ ducks were missing.
Cody was hungry as well …
