National Lighthouse Day on Saturday was marked with a gathering of caring community and family members, and extended restoration lovers, on the property of the Bolivar Point Lighthouse. Next year marks the 150th Birthday of the Bolivar Point Lighthouse and the Bolivar Point Lighthouse Foundation is kicking into high gear on a mission to restore the blessed landmark. After many years of weathering and neglect, the Bolivar Point Lighthouse is ready for a new day to shine. The homes and lighthouse have been privately owned since 1947 by the Boyt and Maxwell Families. E.V. Boyt bought the property for the amazingly constructed homes, government built in 1917. The property just happened to come with a lighthouse, too.
The Bolivar Point Lighthouse Foundation was created five years ago to help raise funds for the restoration. Leading the foundation, Amy Maxwell Chase, along with a board of directors including family, local dignitaries, and a former US congressman, has formed a team ready to restore the lighthouse to its original glory and eventually welcome the public to experience its grandeur. Amy explains, “We’re on a journey. It’s an honor, it’s a privilege. We’re stewards of this property, it’s a stewardship mission. It’s going to take the whole peninsula, together.” Historical Architect, Larry Irsik, explains the process by which the lighthouse will be restored and renewed for future generations to enjoy. Not only will the lighthouse itself be repaired, but also, access to the landmark will tell the story with exhibits, an understanding about the lighthouse, the region, and the history. “It’s an experience,” explains Larry.
The Boyt and Maxwell families, along with Historical Architect Larry Irsik, are committed to restoring the lighthouse to its original glory.
With awareness, fundraising, and help from the community and beyond, the Bolivar Point Lighthouse can be restored to its original condition, complete with black and white stripes, and controlled public access. It will once again shine and continue to welcome Texans home.
