Happy 223rd Birthday to Jane Long

Who is Jane Long? The answer to that question is actually quite “long” in itself. Jane Long is known as THE MOTHER OF TEXAS because she gave birth to one of the first pioneer children born in Texas. She survived at Bolivar Point through out a horrible winter in 1821. Jane supported the Texans’ fight for freedom from Mexico. A Richmond, Texas school and World War II Liberty Ship were named in her honor. Due to the efforts of Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation (BPCF) Foundation and The Jane Long Society, a picture of Jane Long hangs in the Texas Capitol Library, a wonderful pavilion exists at Ft. Travis, and HWY 87 is the official Jane Long Memorial Highway.

BPCF held a special 223rd birthday party for Jane at her Pavilion on Saturday, July 24, 2021. People celebrated with speeches, commemorations, a skit and delicious cupcakes and punch. The bunkers of Ft. Travis were open for viewing during the day. Attendees certainly enjoyed the event.
