Wind , Wind, Wind…Go Away!
Now through the middle of June is usually some of the best times to catch speckled trout and reds on some of the main mid bay oyster reefs in Galveston East Bay . When the wind ever gets to a reasonable level and we get some consistent weather, drifting reefs keying on slicks with artificials like Down South Lures can produce lots of action. I prefer days when the tide is lightly moving at the beginning of tide movements. The water temp dropped 10 degrees with the last front but has warmed up above 70 now. Jetty action also starts turning on this time of year through June with live shrimp free lined being hard to beat as the best bait. The jetties still might be one of the best bets this year as the trout population in the bays have not recovered from years of relentless flooding of fresh water. It’s somewhat better, but they are just not there in numbers as in 10 years past.

With the extra high tides and windy days now, south shoreline and marsh drain areas will remain a good bet on high tides. Those that wade fish have the advantage with the shoreline and shell hump areas nearby. Reds are also throughout the bay now and can be found around active bait and bird action.

Surf fishing is good now with reds, flounder, and sharks being caught at the beachfront.

For those that have taken my class, we are in mid spring to late spring patterns with normal to optimum water conditions. Don’t forget to ask for your updates before you go out. Fish are concentrated in smaller areas and are on the move some now and you will waste time hitting every main reef.

I have a couple days now open toward the end of May for reserved private on the water classes. Reserve your time now as we have had to work around the persistent strong winds and fronts to conduct classes in the best conditions.

We will spend a half-day trip exploring that bay and the techniques and timing of fishing there. Bring your hand-held GPS and a map and note pad and I will further your knowledge of the bay and patterns for fishing in all of the seasons of the year.
