By Elinor Tinsley,
Yesterday, the Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation had its first event in almost 14 months. We traveled to the Smith Oaks Rookery in High Island to witness one of the greatest treasures in our area and appropriately, it was Earth Day. We met at 5:00 pm in the parking lot to share in a light sack dinner, graciously provided to us by Karen and Chris Gatlin, owners of the Tiki Beach Bar & Grill in Crystal Beach (Stop by for one of their great Thursday steaks nights or their Friday lunch specials). We started our self-guided tour at 5:30 pm, taking advantage of the birds coming in for their evening roost. If you’ve never experienced the Rookery at Smith Oaks or Boy Scout Woods, it is definitely worth the $8 to do so. There’s just not enough to say about what the Houston Audubon has created in High Island for the pleasure of nature lovers, novice bird watchers and the very experienced ones too.
The Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation is an organization that strives to introduce and enlighten people to the many different forms of art, history, music and nature that we have available to us here on the Bolivar Peninsula and on our sister island of Galveston, TX. This year our annual dues are $20 per person or couple, and this offers you discounts on our outings, lectures and events we have throughout the year. You don’t have to be a resident to join and dues can be mailed to P. O. Box 314, Port Bolivar, TX 77650, or contact us by messenger on our Facebook page if you would like to join.
Our next event will be a booth at the Texas Crab Festival on May 7-9, 2021, where we will be offering lots of Jane Long information, raffling off a 3-ft concrete lighthouse, selling our 3-ft and 6-ft concrete lighthouses, and handing out information about our Light up Bolivar contest. Stop by and check us out and sign up to join our group while you are there. We are also planning to have Hal Needham, the weatherman, for a lecture in early June, so stay posted for details.
Please enjoy just a few of our photos from our event.
