After many months of staying home and distancing due to Covid restrictions, people were anxious and ready to get out and celebrate at the 4th Annual Brad & Big Rich’s Cajun Chef’s Cookoff. Festival Park’s Crab Fest grounds were booming with excitement on Saturday as it welcomed participants and guests. The event was previously held at Stingaree Restaurant but has moved to the spacious venue to allow for larger crowds and more events.
The Cookoff began as a fun, family event with tasty food to raise funds for those in need. It quickly evolved into a sizable event with Cajun cooking, a silent and live auction, live music, arts and crafts vendors, a washers tournament, beer garden, and more.
Before the sun came up, seven chef teams started cooking to compete in three categories: Bloody Mary, gumbo, and cajun dish of choice. The gates opened at 10:30 am and the crowds steadily streamed in. With the aroma of gumbo in the air, hundreds of folks purchased sample cups to taste the various entries. The Live music began at 11 and went on all afternoon.
The washers tournament produced an unlikely winner. The cook team winners were announced at 3 pm, awarding the People’s Choice, Third Place, Second Place, and $1000 cash to the First Place Winner. The party went on through the evening with happy faces and full bellies all around. It is perhaps a sign of good things to come with the pandemic fears slowly easing.
