The peninsula was heating up as 27 teams fired up their grills and served tasty BBQ as they competed in the 20th Annual Port Bolivar VFD BBQ Cookoff. Friday night began with a Winner-Takes-All fajitas contest. On Saturday, the grillmasters tested their skills for the best beans, chicken, ribs, and brisket. And the tastebuds of the judges were working overtime.
Everyone’s favorite auctioneer, Big Daddy – Larry Flanagan, led the live auction, bringing in a record amount for the VFD. The auction went on for about two hours, breaking only to announce BBQ winners along the way. Among the big ticket items was a custom made cutting board that was sold and re-sold, raising $15,500 from two generous bidders. Several bidders competed for two Trump caps that were auctioned for $500 each. In a special auction for a “Fireman’s Wreath”, five bidders pooled together and raised $6000 for the family of a local teenager hospitalized after a water park accident a week ago. The BBQ teams waited anxiously throughout the auction to hear the results. All were announced with Brisket at the end. Several teams donated their prize money back to the VFD.
The BBQ Cookoff is always a crowd pleaser thanks to a supportive community.
