Cookers and Builders and Smokers and Families were all gathered as the teams and attendees of the 19th Annual Port Bolivar Volunteer Fire Department BBQ Cookoff. Saturday brought sunny skies for the cooking teams to fire up the pits and begin grilling early that morning. And there was an optional Winner-Takes-All competition for fajitas on Friday evening. The 19 teams entered in the various categories of beans, chicken, ribs, and brisket. And as usual, the team names did not disappoint, ranging from sublime to silly and everything in between.
The turn-in times continued throughout the afternoon and judges had the pleasure of tasting all of the delicious entries. Awarding the tasty options was no easy decision. The First Place Chicken dish went to Soup Hounds; First Place Ribs was awarded to The Strimple Sisters; and First Place Brisket went to the Pit Crew Cookers alongside their Fajita Night winnings. But it should go as no surprise that the First Place Beans winner was none other than Fart-A-Licious. Need we say more?
After the judges selected the winners, the live auction started with auctioneer Big Daddy Larry. Over 120 donated items were up for auction, including a custom guitar autographed by Tracy Byrd, and numerous craft items from local artists. The 50-50 raffle brought in almost $2000, and the winner, Kane Hopper with Capn. Phil’s Cook Team, donated his $980 share back to the VFD. Congratulations to all the teams and winners. And thanks to everyone for your support of our fire department.
