Age Defying Will Armstrong Carries Team to Sunday Win
Three hundred yard drives and laser-like long iron shots are a distant memory for the numerous Medicare eligible golfers that tee it up at the Ranch on Sunday mornings. The loss of distance doesn’t make them any less valuable to their teams, however, as evidenced by Will Armstrong’s remarkable performance with the putter Sunday. Fellow senior Ron Bozeman, who set up Armstrong’s antics with his booming drives, aging Dabney Harrison, who hit every green, and soon to be senior Mike VanZandt gleefully watched Will Armstrong make a 30 foot eagle putt, a 35 foot birdie putt, and two ten foot birdie putts on the way to a 5 under par winning score. The laid-back Armstrong, who only threw three clubs in expletive laced disgust Sunday, has been a fixture at the Ranch for over sixteen years. In addition to carrying many younger teammates to wins, Armstrong designed and built the fourth, seventh and eighth holes at the Ranch. His most recent hole-in-one came in May of 2013 at an age when many of his contemporaries are snoozing in the nursing home. Thanks for the memories and the cash, Will Armstrong.

John Milby had a nice week on the Par 3 tracks at the Ranch. Milby shot 29-28 to win both contests, two skins, and $165 for the week. Lucky-assed David Buchanan only made one par in 18 holes of Par 3 play last week, shooting 36-33, but made two birdies that won skins worth $125. Buchanan, whose putting struggles have been mentioned here in the past, added a new Odyssey putter to his bag for Thursday’s Par-3 contest and promptly 3 putted six of the nine greens. The bird slaughtering Buchanan was no doubt distracted by the hundreds of doves circling the Ranch during Thursday’s contest.
Light week for the Ladies at the Ranch but it was nice to have Pandora Brooke show up to play with Margo and Carolyn Wednesday at 4 p.m. Beautiful weather to play golf, Ladies, dust off your clubs.
Michael Comeaux drew James Erwin, Dewey Jones, and Lance Ferguson in the 10/12-9 a.m. Sunday Scramble and their five under par 31 was good for a two shot win. A note about Lance Ferguson. The affable exterminator played through numerous injuries and surgeries this past year and almost always finished in the money. In the next Calcutta, remember to bid on whatever team Lance is on for your best chance to cash in.
