The Galveston County Health District is reminding everyone that the old saying about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure is especially true when it comes to influenza. The “ounce of prevention” is a flu shot which is the best way to prevent the flu. “Do not wait. Get your seasonal flu vaccination now,” said Randy Valcin, GCHD Epidemiologist. “It is one of the best ways to protect yourself and others from seasonal flu.”
Influenza is not just a winter inconvenience, but a contagious respiratory illness. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to complications, hospitalization, and even death. The national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that everyone six months of age and older get the shot, which becomes effective against several strains of influenza about two weeks after inoculation. It is especially important for some people to get vaccinated.
GCHD will host public flu shot clinics at the following locations on the dates and times listed. Flu shots are $20 each, and staff will accept Medicare cards for reimbursement and also Blue Cross Blue Shield.

“County residents can help reduce the spread of seasonal flu by continuing to practice good hygiene habits,” said Valcin. “You need to be sure to wash hands thoroughly and frequently to protect yourself from germs and cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or sleeve when you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not available for hand washing we recommend using a hand sanitizer.”
