I think it was last year about this time, it was almost Fall, and we would sit on the deck, watching the raccoon family. They would cross the street from the slough before dark. One by one, they would climb the piling to my neighbor’s house, find an opening into the abandoned, boarded up structure and settle in for the evening. What a sight! I would imagine they would find a nice cozy bed or chair to sleep on and call it a day. Just the other day, it was getting close to 4 in the afternoon, my husband and I were driving around on the peninsula. We decided to drive over to the Fort. As we passed the abandoned and boarded up hotel behind the food store, I glanced up at the railing and wondered why some rooms were not boarded. There, in the window, with his little feet crossed in front of him, was a raccoon perched in the window, watching the traffic pass by. Two lamp shades behind him on a table and the headboard of the bed visible.
What do you think about raccoons taking up residence in buildings? There they are, out of the rain, a nice soft bed to sleep in … I’m thinking they must be pretty smart critters. Don’t they even wash their hands before eating?
GO’s Sand Bucket is only one beach bum’s journal of life at the beach, probably something each of you can relate to. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts, visions and/or feelings of just exactly what the beach means to you.
