Fishing Report For August 20 through August 26, 2013

By Ed Snyder/Outdoors
Steady NE and E winds kept the bite down somewhat for night-shift and day-shift anglers allowing fewer trout catches than normal, but redfish made active runs with plenty of slot and bull reds loading up on anglers fishing lines. Sand trout did well with an early run of Gulf (silver) trout adding a few to the fish fry boxes. The Autumn run of golden croaker is just a couple weeks away with a few nice goldens to 12 inches coming in early. Flounder action were pretty much limited to smaller male flounder migrating to the Gulf as forerunners to the Annual Fall Flounder run of the larger females. Rule of thumb is one flounder out of five caught as being a 14 inch or larger keeper.

Speckled Trout
Steady NE and E winds kept the bite down somewhat for the night-shift and day-shift anglers allowing for fewer trout catches than normal (Limit: 15 inch minimum for 10 trout with only one 25 inch trout per day allowed as part of your daily limit).

Redfish (Red Drum)
The annual redfish run is almost here with some making an early run (Limit: 20 inches minimum to 28 inch maximum for 3 reds per day, one over 28 inch red -plus bonus red- allowed when properly tagged in addition to your 3 fish limit).

Black Drum
A few keepers but not many showing up with some bulls to 37 inches giving anglers a fight (Limit: 14 inch minimum to 30 inch maximum for 5 fish per day with one OVER 52 inches allowed).

Flounder
The smaller male flounder seem to be making their early exits to the gulf for their annual spawning run. The males will leave the bays first with the larger females following when the bay waters begin to cool (Limit: 14 inch minimum for 5 fish per day).

Sheepshead
SLOW with a few hitting baits (Limit: 15 inch minimum with 5 per day Creel).

Gafftop Catfish
Slow, but some nice keepers coming in (Limit: 14 inch minimum for no limit creel).

Whiting/Croaker
Whiting are excellent in the pass as well as the surf. Croaker are still small but plentiful with a few larger Goldens beginning to show up (No Limit).

Sandtrout/Gulftrout
Sand trout are good in the cut but mainly at night. A few Gulf (silver) trout are beginning to show up in anglers boxes (No Limit).

Blue Claw Crab
GREAT CRABBING (Limit: 5 inches between points with no berry crabs -females with eggs- allowed).

Stone Crabs
A few stones coming in from the rocky areas (Limit: only right claw may be kept when 2-1/2 inches above first knuckle)

Stingaree Bait Camp Report
Excellent speck and red action around East Bay flats, reefs, and grass, many limits being had on both bait and plastic anglers when weather and tides allow.

I fished Rollover pass once in my life, it was in 1959. A military friend from Galvestan invited me to fish with him. The fishing was incredible, I never laughed so hard in my life…Most of my time was spent untangling my line from those across the way. No one was angry about being tangled, everyone was having a ball. I have never been back, but I have never forgotten my day at rollover pass…What fun…Howie

My mother-in-law had a story, famous in family lore, about the Great Croaker Run of 1970-something when my husband’s father, along with dozens of other fisher folk, pulled croaker from The Cut till they couldn’t pull no more. Somehow we never found time to ask that kind gentleman to teach us to fish before he passed.

Ed, does anyone on the peninsula teach others how to fish? It’s time. I’m a grandma myself now and would love to spend time, either with my grands or by myself, fishing and reminiscing. If you don’t know of anyone, do you have any pointers about getting self-taught?

Thanks for stories and photos. Never seen a picture of an angler who wasn’t smiling.
