If you missed the Deborah Duncan Show, Great Day Houston, you missed the wildest Crab Race ever! Thirteen of our Bolivar Peninsula/Crystal Beach residents left the peninsula at 5am on Tuesday morning to arrive at the KHOU 11 Studios in Houston to begin filming. The show aired at 9am, as scheduled. The team was awake, alive and excited to be on television! Deborah opened the show, holding a live Blue Crab, barely wiggling, still a little cold from the trip from Port Bolivar to Houston. The crabs were picked up on Monday and kept on ice, to be fresh for the trip inland. Our very own chef extraordinaire, Marlene Mallet, prepared crab cakes onscreen, while Gerry Lang was interviewed by Deborah Duncan and answered questions about the “come back” of Bolivar! As the aroma of crab cakes filled the room, Sid Jackson and Robin Kasiske demonstrated the Crab Races. All warmed up, the crabs, Bolivar and Crystal, raced down the crab track in full force, prompted by squirt guns filled with brine water (also brought to the studio from the beach). Deborah ended the show, holding a bubble blowing crab. I think he was anxious to get back to the coast.
