He knows if you’ve been bad or good…

By Georgia Osten
So be good for goodness sake! His name is Elfie, our Elf on the Shelf. He shows up a few weeks before Christmas to watch over us while Santa is preparing his list of toys for good boys and girls. He magically flies back to Santa each night to give a report on the day, and returns before we wake up in the morning. He’ll make his final trip back to the North Pole on Christmas Eve. But during these few weeks before Christmas, you just never know where he’s going to be when you wake up in the morning.

Oh this little fella is full of surprise and sometimes mischief. About a week ago, we found Elfie on the shelf in the pantry with a bottle of honey, sipping some sweetness through a straw – “Sweet tooth” Elfie! Other times, he was flying through the living room on a red rope, hanging from the ceiling fan, in the bowl full of Kisses, or ready to watch over the kids in the playroom. Yesterday morning, he was near the dining room, hanging upside down, swinging on his candy cane swing like in Cirque du Soleil. And still another morning, he was found roasting marshmallows near a candle to make S’mores. He sure does have fun!

The rules state that you can’t touch him or he’ll lose his magical powers to fly back to Santa at the North Pole. But this final morning, Christmas Eve, he sits on the mantle by the huge sign he made with sticky notes – “1 Day,” with a special note to the kids who live in this house. On this day, for just a minute, you can take him down from his location, touch him, give him a kiss and a hug to say goodbye, and put him back on the mantle and he won’t lose his magic.

I’m sure Elfie kept an eye on Addyson and Michael though, and made his reports to Santa. We’ll know on Christmas morning if the reports were good or bad by the amount of presents Santa leaves.

Wishing all a Merry Christmas – be good this year. Hope you didn’t forget to leave some cookies and milk out for Santa and some carrots for Rudolph and his reindeer friends!
