In a special meeting on Monday, the Galveston County Commissioners Court voted 3-2 to move forward with the Bolivar Peninsula Wastewater Project. The agenda item that passed: “Direct county employees to address and respond to GLO needs/requests to move forward with Bolivar Pen. Waste Water project and issue Work Orders for Engineering and Environmental and remove any unilateral actions that have placed the project on hold submitted by County Commissioner Precinct 1.”
Commissioners Patrick Doyle, Kevin O’Brien, and Stephen Holmes voted in favor of the project; County Judge Mark Henry and Commissioner Ken Clark voted in opposition.
The subsequent agenda item failed, with a vote of 2-3: “Consideration of removal of Bolivar Waste Water CDBG Round 1 project and replace with an eligible alternate project to be determined submitted by County Judge.”

Will we be forced to hook up to this system? I have heard that if our aerobic septic system should be damaged, we will then have to hook to the proposed sewage plan. We do not wish to join it under any circumstances.

From what I’ve heard it’s going to cost us $10k/house to hook up so we can all pay ???/month when we’ve already paid that much for our own OSSF. Of course the indigents would be exempt from this MANDATORY hook up so let’s soak the more affluent! This is something that is NOT needed in Crystal Beach and is going to cost MUCH more than the Fed’s are putting up. If they still go on with it there should be language to it’s not mandatory to hook up. FOLLOW THE MONEY!
As a Bolivar Peninsula homeowner, I need additional information before I can determine if I support or oppose the proposed estimated government funded $19 million dollar Waste Treatment Facilities Project. Questions (besides economic growth or environmental protection) need to be asked and answered, rumors need to be addressed and facts need to be presented.
One such rumor I have heard lately is this is to enable low income housing to come to Crystal Beach….is this true? Anyone can make a study (such as an environmental one) and based on your data….can draw just about any conclusion you desire.
According to reports, this will be a ‘for profit’ facility. This goes contrary to any MUD or SUD I have encountered in the past. I thought a sewage treatment facility was intended to be just that….not a ‘pet project’ that brings governmental agencies and tax payer dollars to our area.
The larger question that must be asked (as a home/business owner) is: Are you involved in the politics and future plans for the peninsula, or do you just live and play here….?
From closing Roll-over Pass to the Ike Dike and the funding of the Windstorm Insurance program, there are many items on our areas’ agenda. Did you know that the windstorm insurance is only required for coastal counties and that the premiums are only born exclusively by those counties inhabitants? For a wild fire in West Texas, however, all homeowners’ insurance policy rates include that hazard so those rates are softened by the sheer numbers of contributors.
Keep your eyes and ears open. Ask questions and above all, get involved or your voice will not be heard until it is too late. My Daddy always told me to follow the money, so that is one thing I will be looking into….just who is set to profit for this Waste Facility that is supposed to be so good for us. Personally, I have a self-contained unit that does not have to be tied into any outside system….or so they say, unless some government bean counter says I have to ‘to make the whole system viable’.
Again, at this point I’m neither for or against it, but a bell is going off in my head and I keep thinking of what a famous American once said….”We are from the government and We are here to help…” and I do not feel any comfort from that and remember….the devil is in the details.

I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR WHY HENRY AND CLARK VOTED AGAINST THE WASTE WATER PROJECT. SEEMS GALVESTON WANTS TO KEEP ALL THE MONEY ON THE ISLAND. REMEMBER THAT AT ELECTION TIME.
